Oral Cancer Screenings
During an in-office oral exam at our Edmond, OK office, Dr. Jamie Talley will perform an oral cancer screening by checking your face, neck, and mouth for any abnormalities that may indicate signs of oral cancer. This is most often done through a visual examination for any growths or lesions, but sometimes Dr. Talley may use other tests to look for any abnormal cells in your mouth.
Risk factors are an important topic in the discussion of which patient need screenings for oral cancers. Some lifestyle risk factors are tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, or even a history of significant sun exposure. Previous oral cancer diagnosis is also a significant factor. Any of these things may prompt a screening. Although there are known risk factors, the Mayo Clinic has stated that oral cancer cases have been increasing in recent years while the reasons for that are not yet clear.
Dr. Talley has discovered oral cancer in her patient who was unaware and had no symptoms on a daily basis. This screening allowed for the patient to see their doctor and sek out treatment while the cancer was in the early stages. Therefore, oral cancer screenings are important for more patients as early detection for any cancer can significantly increase treatability.
